Peacemaking Programs - Uganda
Global Peace Hut was founded by Marg Huber, the previous Director of the Centre for Conflict Resolution at the Justice Institute of BC. She first taught conflict resolution in East Africa in 2000 and spent the past several years building a local training team and with the team creating a Ugandan curriculum in peacemaking and conflict resolution. The team has worked with over 7000 children and youth at 18 schools in and around Kampala and Entebbe, Uganda, including slum and village schools as well as schools in the urban areas.

Global Peace Hut-Uganda’s projects are successful in large part because they are youth teaching youth. The peacemaking team is able to really engage the children and youth in "becoming peacemakers", as they learn ways to manage their anger and deal with their conflicts – both at school and at home. The team of 6 find that the students feel safe with them because they are not authority figures, and as a result they are much more inclined to open up and talk about their difficulties. Many students, teachers and parents have talked of the changes they have experienced as a result of this peacemaking training. The children and youth are able to build their self esteem and develop healthy relationships and this in turn helps to protect them from unsafe relationships and exposure to HIV/AIDS. Peacemaking becomes a potent tool for healing and community development.

What people say about GPH's peacemaking programs

“…This is what excites my heart about this peacemaking training. It changes the human being from the inside out.” Hellen Akello, Headmistress of Bugolobi Literacy School.

“…then our visitors came and they teach us about that peacemaker. I learned about peace. Then I started to change at school. All the children was hating me. They started to like me. That time was a hard time, because I was knowing in my heart nobody could forgive me at school. But I apologized to them. Every child was there. They forgave me. They gave me a leader. Now I’m assistant head boy. I started to learn about peace. Peace is happiness. When you got a peace, it’s happiness.” Vicent Walujo, Bugolobi Literacy School, Kampala

Caning does not train a child, but this conflict resolution, this peacemaking, this talking dialogue helps a child to become a better person.” Catherine Mugerwa, Inspector, Ministry of Education, Uganda.

“…now when there is a problem, the students come to teachers and say: ‘You know they told us about peacemaking, why can’t we sit down and solve this simply?’”  Peace teacher, Grace High School, Kampala
