we sit together and we eat together. When we are enjoying life…that means that I have peace.”

The Origins of Global Peace Hut

The concept of a Peace Hut originated in the village of Luwolo, Kajo Keji County, South Sudan, an area that has known war for most of the past 40 years. People expressed an interest in coming together in a small and simple hut to talk about difficult matters.

As the hut was being built, the community came together to commemorate it and dedicate it as a centre of peace and positive change at a community level; a place where everyone would be welcome, a symbol of unity in a region where many tribes co-exist.

From those beginnings, the simple image of the Peace Hut evolved to represent a gathering place that is virtual or structural where children & adults come together in community for conversation, which is the heart of peace making. Gathering places transcend time, cultures and faiths.

The circle is a widely used form of gathering place. It is a universal sacred symbol for togetherness and unity. Sitting in circle allows for equality and full participation. In combination, the peace hut and circle become an empowering force for change and peace making.
